Getting Started In TFC Safaris

The version of TFC (Team Fortress Classic) which we use is run as a mod (modified game) utilizing the Half-Life gaming engine. What this means to you is that you will be using Half-Life to play TFC.

The installation of TFC is mostly simple. The steps are:

  • Get Steam
  • Get TFC
  • Play TFC

Start at http://www.valvesoftware.com

This will take you to a screen looking very much like the image below (at least until they redesign their website.) For the moment, look for a screen similar to that below.

You will find a link which says "Get Valve's Games". You can see a blow up of the correct button in the image below:

Next you will be at http://steampowered.com/

Clicking on the "Get Valve's Games" will take you to the following screen. You will be visiting this page twice. The first time you come here will be to "Get Steam Now". Look for a button with that title. Below is a blow-up showing you the location of the button in the screen.

Next you will be at http://www.steampowered.com/?area=getsteamnow

Clicking on the "Get Steam Now!" will take you to the following screen. Click on the "CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE STEAM INSTALLER". This will download the installer. After downloading the installer. Install Steam. Follow the appropriate options and you should be okay. Millions of pre-teens manage this. Hopefully all we go equally well for you. I say hopefully because we have found 1) some adults don't seem to do as well as pre-teens when it comes to computers, and 2) we have found a few not so minor glitches can occur--especially in older systems. So don't be surprised if you run into a minor glitch or two. But have faith. So far we have managed to install on most systems. The only exception being an older computer run by someone with major bad computer karma.

Return to http://www.steampowered.com/

After installing Steam, return to the main steampowered.com page. This time look for a button on the left (see blow-up below) for "Buy Steam games".

Next you will be at http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=all

Clicking on "Buy Steam games" will bring you to a long list of possible games. Look down the alphabetic list for Team Fortress Classic. Click on that line.

Next you will be at http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=game&AppId=20&

There are three options on this screen. We have been purchasing the "Half-Life 1 Anthology" for $14.95. We have received reports that the "Team Fortress Classic" at $9.95 seems to work just fine. It's up to you. If you want to experiment, and feel you have the geekitude to do it, then buy the $9.95 version. If you want to just do what the rest of us have done, get the $14.95 version.

Next you will be at http://storefront.steampowered.com/v2/index.php?area=redirect&id=40&app=20&

You will be taken to this intermediate screen. You must have Steam installed prior to making your purchase. After installing, click on the "Yes, I already have Steam installed!" button.

Next you will see an "External Protocol Request" pop-up

This pop-up is part of your browser's security system. I am of course assuming that you are using Mozilla's Firefox browser. If you insist on using Internet Explorer I have no idea what the pop-ups will look like. I find the exploits and security holes in IE too much for me. I use Firefox.

Assuming the protocol screen is similar to the one below (look for steam://purchase/40 or steam://purchase/29) click on the "Launch application" button. This will take you into the rest of the process. I don't have screen shots of that process. To do that I would need to purchase the game again. If you get lost check in. But so far many folks have done okay.
